I haven't made the tutorial yet, like I said I was going to. I've been gone for about four days, and while I guess I had the time and resources to make the tutorial, I enjoyed relaxing with my friends a bit too much to stop and make the tutorial.
Expect the tutorial in the next few days. I'm going to start working on it today.

Some Progress
I called the record company, and even though I didn't get the answer I wanted, it wasn't exactly the worst case scenario. He said there wasn't really art or design needed until August, and asked me to email any work I've done recently. I emailed him a link to the poster I made and said they could keep it for free. He was impressed with the design, said he'd definitely keep me in mind for future art needs. I'm not gonna hold my breath on it, though. I'm going to try to find other local labels or bands to pair up with.
I've also decided to stick with Gimp for now, instead of Photoshop. I was able to make a good quality poster without paying tons of money for Photoshop's software. I'll be writing a simple tutorial on how to make a poster (like the one in my last blog post) either tomorrow or the day after.

Outlook Good
I finally got a reply. My acquaintance, the one who's pretty involved with the record company's events and such said that they'd love to accept any help that they can get and to call them. I'm going to call them tomorrow. I'm hopefully on my way to my first freelance gig. I'd say that's good progress. I made this blog two days ago when I had no leads, no anything, and it looks likely that I'll be working with a record label soon.
Since I don't have a portfolio, I thought I'd make a band poster to show them what I'm capable of. There are a few issues in the design, but they can be fixed pretty easily.

Looking for Work
What I've been trying to do the past couple of days is land a job designing gig posters. If I can team up with a band, record label, or venue, I'll have a steady stream of work and income. It'd be a good way to get my foot in the door. I'm at a bit of a disadvantage because I don't have a portfolio, and I'm working on GIMP instead of photoshop, but to compensate for that I plan on offering a free poster to prove that I'm competent and pricing each poster at $35 for the design. I don't know what the usual cost of design goes for, but $35 seems extrememly competitive for a high quality design.
So far I've contacted someone related to a local record company about making gig posters and I've gotten no reply. I'm guessing I'll have to talk directly to someone from the company to land the job. They represent 14 bands so I'd be doing at least one poster a week. I'm really hoping to score this job.

The Journey to Freelance
I'm a newly graduated artist and this blog will document my 'journey' to becoming a fulltime freelance designer and also showcase quality pieces of design and pieces that inspire me. More to come soon :)
